Reasons For Pursuing A Career - 1467 Words

As I sat at my computer, summoning the courage to apply to dental school, I found myself asking, â€Å"What was it? Which moment in time?† Truthfully, there wasn’t one experience or moment. My list of reasons for pursuing a career in dentistry is extensive. A career in the dental field offers many benefits. These benefits include job security, comfortable pay scale, excellent flexibility in respect to work hours, a broad spectrum of work environments, such as private practice or a hospital, flexibility to find a job almost anywhere in the world, from an urban or rural setting near home, to the far reaches of the world. While all of these benefits might be enough reason or motivation for someone to enter the dental field, my interest goes far beyond the benefits. Impacted as a small girl by a dental trauma, my exposure and interest in the dental field grew from numerous positive experiences and left me with a thirst to spend time in a dental setting; first from a patien t perspective, and then as a student. My motivation and interest stems from a lifelong love and fascination for teeth. As the years have passed, I did and still do become excited about walking into a dental office. The sounds, the smells, the instruments, being in a dental chair as a patient, or being chair side assisting, are all aspects I love.
